The area around the eyes can show early signs of aging because of the loss of fat causing hollowing, droopy skin, or droopy eyebrows. These can result in loose skin over the eyelashes, inability to open the eyes fully, bags under the eyes, and dark circles under the eyes. A plastic surgeon can perform eyelid surgery to address these problems, resulting in a younger, well-rested, more energetic appearance.
Dr. Bahman Guyuron has 37 years of experience in the field of plastic surgery. He has performed a variety of eyelid surgeries for patients in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, nationally, and internationally over the years, with pleasing results.
WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY?
The clinical name for eyelid surgery is blepharoplasty, which deals with the area between the eyebrow and upper cheek. This surgery can correct defects and abnormalities as well as improve aesthetic appearances. The surgery can be done on the upper or lower eyelids independently or together. Here are a few of the more common issues that can be improved by blepharoplasty.
- Loose, sagging skin on the upper lids
- Excess fat deposits that result in upper eyelid puffiness
- Loose, sagging skin causing under eye wrinkles
- Dark circles under the eye due to loss of volume
- Hollowness around the eyes
In some cases, sagging skin on the upper eyelids and stretching of muscles around the eyes can limit the opening of the eyes and interfere with vision. This problem can also be corrected by eyelid surgery.
HOW IS EYELID SURGERY PERFORMED?
Eyelid surgery is an outpatient surgery performed under anesthesia. The procedure can take up to 75 minutes.
To begin the surgery, Dr. Guyuron will make small incisions along the natural crease in the upper eyelid. The incision for the lower eye is made along the lower lash line or within the inner surface of the eyelid. During surgery, Dr. Guyuron will reposition or remove excess fat and trim the redundant skin, tighten loose skin and the muscles around the eye, and if necessary, often inject fat into some areas to reduce thin skin and dark circles.
After eyelid surgery, there will be some bruising and swelling around the eyes. Using a cool compress and pain medications can be very helpful. Makeup can be worn within a few days after the procedure; however, it can take several weeks for the eyelids to fully recover. In most cases, the results of eyelid surgery are visible within 2-3 weeks.
