The eye area is especially vulnerable to the effects of aging and gravity. Some of the most common signs of an aging face are a sagging eyebrows and frown lines, which can make the face look tired or angered, and creases across the forehead. Brow lift, otherwise known as forehead lift, is specifically targeted to provide smoothness and tightness in this area. With more than 30 years of plastic surgery experience, Dr. Guyuron helps his Cleveland brow lift patients as well as those from out of state and international patients, look refreshed and youthful. Dr. Guyuron frequently shares his forehead lift techniques with other plastic surgeons internationally through lectures during symposia, courses, articles and book chapters.
During the brow lift consultation, Dr. Guyuron explores why the candidate is seeking plastic surgery and what his or her ideal outcome entails. Brow lift candidates often choose to improve one or more of the following:
After establishing an understanding of the goal of surgery, Dr. Guyuron performs an evaluation of the candidate’s face and forehead, and inquires about his or her medical history. This is to confirm the candidate is in good health and can undergo surgery without increasing the surgical risks. Dr. Guyuron will also carefully assess the condition of the eyelids since commonly forehead and eyelid aging are present concomitantly and one condition can exacerbate the other. Dr. Guyuron will also discuss brow lift techniques and other aspects of the surgery, including anesthesia and incision placement. He may also discuss other facial plastic surgery procedures such as facelift or eyelid surgery, when indicated. He and his team will advise how the patient can prepare for their day of surgery and make arrangements for recovery.
For out-of-town patients who plan to visit Dr. Guyuron, our staff can arrange for a Skype, FaceTime or phone consultation instead of a face-to-face meeting.
Brow lift is performed on an outpatient basis. Patients will receive medications to keep them comfortable and relaxed during surgery. Dr. Guyuron first makes five incisions, each about ½ of an inch, all within the hairline. Alternatively he may suggest making a long incision along the hairline to shorten and lift the forehead at the same time. He may move, rearrange or weaken the wrinkle-causing muscles in the forehead and brow area. Then, he will lift the brow skin and remove excess, loose skin. Excess fat is also removed. For patients who need forehead shortening and the lift or shortening alone, Dr. Guyuron may make the incision at the hairline. For those who have frown lines but do not need eyebrow lift he may trim the muscles through an eyelid incision.
The length of surgery will depend on the particular case and patient. After resting in the recovery suite for a short time, patients are released to go home.

A brow lift offers numerous aesthetic and psychological benefits for individuals looking to rejuvenate their appearance. By lifting sagging skin and reducing the appearance of frown lines, patients often report feeling more confident and satisfied with their looks, which can positively impact their social and professional interactions.
In addition to enhancing facial aesthetics, a brow lift can also improve peripheral vision by lifting the brow and reducing excess skin that may obstruct sight. Many patients find that they not only look younger but also feel more energetic and approachable, which contributes to overall well-being.
Ideal candidates for a brow lift are typically individuals experiencing noticeable signs of aging in the forehead area, such as sagging skin, deep lines, or a tired appearance. Dr. Guyuron evaluates each patient’s unique facial structure and aesthetic goals to determine if a brow lift is the most suitable option.
Patients should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations regarding the outcomes of the surgery. Those with specific conditions, such as certain skin disorders or cardiovascular issues, may need to discuss alternative options with Dr. Guyuron during their consultation.
For those who may not be ready for surgical intervention, there are several non-surgical alternatives to consider for brow lifting. Options such as Botox injections can temporarily smooth out forehead lines and elevate the brow, providing a less invasive solution with minimal downtime.
Additionally, dermal fillers can be used to restore volume to the brow area, enhancing the overall appearance without the need for surgery. These treatments can be discussed during the consultation to help patients make informed decisions based on their individual needs and desired outcomes.
After a brow lift, proper post-operative care is crucial for optimal recovery and results. Patients are advised to keep their head elevated, apply cold compresses to reduce swelling, and follow Dr. Guyuron's instructions regarding medication and activity restrictions to ensure a smooth healing process.
Regular follow-up appointments will allow Dr. Guyuron to monitor the recovery and address any concerns. Patients should also be mindful of their body’s signals and report any unusual symptoms, ensuring a safe and effective recovery journey.
