Breathe better and look better after nose surgery

Dec 4, 2017, 16:07 PM by Valerie Clark

Are you bothered by breathing difficulty, sinus headaches and frequent sinus infections? For many these are are caused by a deviated septum.

The septum is a partician in the middle of the nose that made of cartilage and bone, and it divides the nose into left and right sides.  The septum is usually straight, but any moderate or sever deviation to the left or right can cause symptoms. A deviated septum blocks the nasal passage, causing problems such as sinus congestion, nosebleeds, headaches, snoring, and sleep apnea.

Something the deviation in the septum is a genetic disposition which usually becomes more obvious as the growth of the face is complete in mid teens, or it can be the result of trauma to the nose. Often those with a deviated septum also have a crooked nose. Both of these problems can be corrected with surgery.

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure used to correct a deviated septum by removing or reshaping the deviated cartilage and bone.  There is no change to the outside appearance of the nose because the incision is made inside the nose, under the skin, as long as the outside of the nose is not touched. Septoplasty is considered a medically necessary procedure, so medical insurance will often cover the cost.

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that can fix a crooked nose, but it will not fix a deviated septum.  Rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance unless it is being done for correction of trauma related misshaped nose or a birth defect.

When a patient has a deviated septum and crooked nose, septorhinoplasty can fix them both. There is no additional recovery from anesthesia, and you get the benefits of two procedures in one.
